Safety
At YHL, safety is our first priority
Safety & Culture
At Yellowhead Helicopters, the health and safety of our employees, passengers, and the communities we serve is at the forefront of everything we do. We operate strictly under federal aviation regulations, believing that operational excellence and an uncompromising commitment to safety are fundamental to our long-term success.
The foundation of our operations is a robust Safety Management System (SMS), actively managed by a dedicated Safety Department.
We make passenger readiness a seamless part of your travel day. Our pre-flight safety video provides an engaging, thorough overview of helicopter operations, which is always paired with a direct safety briefing from your pilot before flight.
Certifications & Standards
We are proud to be registered as a BARS Gold Standard operator by the Flight Safety Foundation. This prestigious international designation is awarded only to operators who demonstrate a mature safety culture and consistently meet or exceed the rigorous criteria of the Flight Safety Foundation’s aviation safety standard.
As a federally regulated carrier, our operations strictly adhere to Transport Canada and federal safety frameworks. To meet the specialized contracting requirements of our industry partners, we actively maintain our SAFE Companies’ certification through the BC Forest Safety Council, achieving the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program standards. These combined achievements reflect our commitment to maintaining risk-mitigated work sites and pursuing continuous safety improvements for our clients, vendors, and team members.
Technology & Innovation
To deliver the safest and most efficient service possible, Yellowhead Helicopters strategically integrates modern technology and industry best practices into our daily operations.
- Advanced Flight Following (AFF): Our entire fleet is equipped with real-time satellite tracking and Iridium-based communication systems. This allows our dispatch center to monitor live aircraft tracking data, ensuring continuous, secure communication with our flight crews regardless of terrain or remote locations.
- Passenger Readiness: Passenger safety is paramount. In addition to our comprehensive pilot-led pre-flight briefings, we utilize a modern pre-flight safety video to ensure all passengers are fully prepared, comfortable, and informed before stepping onto the ramp.
External Audits & Compliance
Yellowhead Helicopters regularly undergoes comprehensive evaluations from our clients, regulatory authorities (Transport Canada), and industry safety organizations (such as the Flight Safety Foundation’s BARS program and the BC Forest Safety Council).
As an active, supportive member of the Helicopter Association of Canada (HAC), we continuously collaborate on national industry advancements and best practices.
We welcome these continuous audits and associations as a valuable opportunity to benchmark our systems, ensuring our infrastructure, specialized training, and proactive safety culture consistently exceed the stringent criteria required by our contract partners.
